The smell of oil paint was in the air at South Shore Center in Alameda this past weekend, with the fruit of the efforts of 40 plein air painters on display. These works were created for the Frank Bette Center for the Arts<\/a>‘ 7th annual Plein Air Paintout (PAPo). After this one-day display and awards ceremony the pieces returned to the Frank Bette in preparation for the gala opening this Friday the 10th, from 7-9 PM.<\/p>\n

There is some really nice work worth checking out. These include traditional land- and waterscapes by\u00a0Catherine Fasciato and Frances Chuba, respectively.<\/p>\n

David Savellano, “1400 Afternoon.”<\/p><\/div>\n

Moving inside, David Savellano contributes “Afternoon 1400,” a moody depiction of 1400 Bar and Grill, a welcome new addition to Alameda’s eateries in a location notorious for short-lived ventures. Hopefully they fare better, since they have one of the best veggie burgers this vegetarian has ever eaten! (Don’t get me started on their tequila drinks.)<\/p>\n

Copious awards were doled out at South Shore, but my pick for best of show is, well, everything by Gabriele Bungardt. Her “Front Page News” would be a perfect image for advertising next year’s Paint Out.<\/p>\n

The paintings will be on display at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts at 1601 Paru through September 29.<\/p>\n
