Despite the preponderance of war paintings, Paul Glaviano resists being labeled as political. “I think all paintings are political,” he said. “I think Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers are political. And to get stuck behind the label ‘political’ painting is not to do justice to the medium.” His work challenges us to rise above politics, and perhaps above our nature as human beings.
